In his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Gary’s creative talent became evident at an early age as he was creating toys in his father’s workshop. A few years later, after teaching himself to play the electric guitar, he started a rock n’ roll band. The band played events throughout Kentucky being the lead-in band for many well-known performers of the early 60’s, including the Marvelettes and Bobby Vinton just to name a few.
After graduating from college with a BA in Psychology, he taught school for several years. With his creative talents always just below the surface, he started Plexart Designs, a company designing and manufacturing Lucite gifts, home accessories and furniture. His company sold to interior designers and retailers including Neiman Marcus. Many of his designs appeared in their prestigious Christmas catalog for several years. In 1986 Gary was commissioned by the Koger Foundation to design and manufacture the Lucite displays for the Ramses II exhibit in Jacksonville.
In 1986 while working on the Ramses II exhibit, Gary and family moved to St. Augustine. A year later, Gary started the screen-printing business Nature by Design selling to major zoos from Chicago to Miami. One of Gary’s designs became the number one seller for the Bronx Zoo for several years. By 1990 the company had evolved into Ancient City Screen Graphics which has customers from Florida to Hawaii.
His ever-evolving creative talents have led him now to the world of abstract art. His dramatic creations are currently being featured at Ancient City Art Gallery on Aviles Street in St. Augustine.
